I swear summer gets shorter every year.
One minute it’s Memorial Day and you’re convinced you have endless weekends ahead of you. Then you blink, it’s September, the sun is setting earlier, and somehow pumpkin spice has already entered the conversation.
Rude.
But before we rush into fall, I think it’s worth taking a minute to appreciate the summer we just had.
I’m guilty of always looking ahead. The next trip. The next weekend. The next dinner. The next opportunity. There is always something coming that we convince ourselves is going to be amazing.
Then it happens, it’s over, and suddenly it’s 47 pictures sitting in your phone that you may or may not ever look at again.
The older I get, the more I realize the best memories usually aren’t the perfectly planned ones anyway.
They’re the random nights that went way later than expected. Sitting around a table laughing about something completely ridiculous. Being on the water. Road trips. Time with your parents and friends you don’t see enough. A beautiful sunset. A great conversation. Or a weekend where absolutely nothing went according to plan but somehow you loved it anyway.
That’s the stuff.
We spend so much time waiting for the “big” moments that sometimes we forget these little ones are actually our lives.
And as much as I hate admitting that summer is ending, I’m trying not to be sad about it.
I’m grateful I got another one.
Another summer to travel, laugh, make memories, spend time with people I love and stay up significantly later than a responsible adult should.
So before you start decorating for fall when it’s still 87 degrees outside, take a second and look back.
Look at the pictures. Remember the trips, the dinners, the ridiculous moments and the people who made your summer what it was.
Because another summer will come.
But we’ll never get this exact one again.
And that’s what makes it worth appreciating.
