The Power of Getting Older: Why Every Year Is a Gift

This week, I turn 43. And you know what? I’m not hiding it. I’m not whispering it like it’s a secret. I’m saying it proudly. Because getting older is one of the greatest gifts we can receive—and yet, so many people treat it like something to be ashamed of.

We live in a culture where people either lie about their age or joke, “Never ask a woman how old she is.” But why? Aging means we’re still here. We’re still growing. We’re still in the game. And each birthday gives us a chance to see life a little more clearly than before.

Clarity Comes With Time

Let’s be honest: we may want to look 25 again, but do we really want to be 25 again? Sure, our skin may have been smoother, but our decisions? Questionable at best. At 25, I thought I had it all figured out—and yet, looking back, I was still figuring out who I was, what I wanted, and what actually mattered.

The beauty of getting older is perspective. With every year, the noise quiets down. You start to recognize what’s worth stressing about and what’s not. You see that half the things you obsessed over in your 20s and 30s didn’t actually matter. You realize that happiness isn’t about having it all—it’s about appreciating what you already have.

A Better Understanding of What’s Important

With age comes wisdom, and wisdom brings peace. You care less about what other people think and more about how you feel. You stop chasing approval and start chasing purpose. You learn that the best moments aren’t about perfection—they’re about connection, laughter, and love.

Getting older also means knowing yourself better. You discover your strength, your resilience, and your capacity to overcome challenges you once thought would break you. Every wrinkle, every laugh line, every year—those are markers of a life lived.

Aging Is a Privilege

The truth is, not everyone gets the gift of aging. Each year we add to our life isn’t something to hide—it’s something to celebrate. Because the alternative is not getting that year at all.

So instead of fighting it, I’m embracing it. I’m grateful for the lessons, the growth, and the chance to keep becoming a better version of myself.

This year, I don’t just want to look young—I want to feel alive. And nothing makes you feel more alive than gratitude for the time you’ve been given.

Final Thought

Aging isn’t the enemy. It’s the teacher. It’s the privilege. It’s the reminder that every year is another chance to live more fully, love more deeply, and step into who you were always meant to be.

Here’s to 43—and to every year that comes after it. May we stop hiding our ages and start wearing them like the badges of honor they are.

Because getting older isn’t something to dread. It’s something to be damn proud of.
